DESCRIPTION

Carthamus Yellow occurs as yellow to dark brown crystals, paste, powder, or liquid with a faint characteristic odor. It is a flavonoid mixture obtained by extracting the corolla (petals) of Carthamus tinctorius L. with water or slightly acidified water and concentrating the extract. The extract may be dried. Safflomin A (hydroxysafflor yellow A) and safflomin B (safflor yellow B) are the principal coloring matters of Carthamus Yellow. Carthamus Yellow also consists of carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, fiber, and flavanoids extracted from the plant material. In addition, food-grade diluents may be added as carriers for manufacturing items of commerce. Carthamus Yellow is very soluble in water, and insoluble in ether and in ethanol.
