Spirulina

DESCRIPTION

Spirulina occurs as a fine, uniform powder or flakes, dark blue-green to green in color, with a mild seaweed taste and smell. It consists of the dried biomass of the cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis (Nordst.) Gomont, also known as Spirulina platensis Geitler. The microorganisms are cultivated and harvested under controlled conditions that prevent the growth of other cyanobacteria, which subsequently averts the production of mycrocystins. Once harvested, the biomass goes through various concentration and rinsing steps, and is dried to its final concentration. This material is not soluble in water.
