DESCRIPTION

l-Phenylalanine occurs as colorless or white, plate-like crystals or as a white crystalline powder. One g is soluble in about 35 mL of water. It is slightly soluble in alcohol, in dilute mineral acids, and in alkali hydroxide solutions. It melts with decomposition at about 283°. The pH of a 1:100 aqueous solution is between 5.4 and 6.0.
