Masticatory Substances, Natural, of vegetable origin occur as a coagulated material that vary in color from white to brown, depending on their moisture content and heat treatment during purification. They consist of the gums from the trees of Sapotaceae, Apocynaceae, Moraceae, and Euphorbiaceae as listed below. The gums are purified by extensive treatment either alone or in combination with other gums or food-grade materials. They are heat-treated and then clarified by centrifugation or by any appropriate means of filtration.
